Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Fine Mesh Strainer
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Sharp knife and cutting board
  • Heatproof mugs or glasses

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 1 orange sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 cloves
  • 3 star anise
  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the red wine, brandy, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, honey or sugar, and vanilla extract.
  • Heat the mixture over medium heat until it begins to steam. Be careful not to let it boil, as this will cause the alcohol to evaporate.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the mulled wine simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse.
  • Using a fine-mesh strainer, strain the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses.
  • Garnish each mug with an orange slice or cinnamon stick, if desired.

Notes

  • You can easily double or triple the recipe for a larger crowd.
  • Use whole spices, not ground, to keep the drink clear and smooth.
