Dutch Oven Brownies: Oven & Campfire

ByMichelle Updated onAugust 17, 2025
Jump to Recipe

It’s hard to imagine that a dessert could be both delicious and easy, but these Dutch oven brownies are just that. If you have the ingredients on hand, you can whip them up in less than an hour with just a few ingredients that you probably already have on hand.

This recipe is simple to make at home in the oven or just as quickly while camping. Top these rich chocolate brownies with rich chocolate sauce, marshmallow fluff and/or ice cream, chocolate chips, and whipped cream for the perfect summer treat!

Dutch Oven Brownies

What You Need to Make Dutch Oven Brownies

A 12-inch enameled Dutch oven is okay for kitchen heat sources, but you must use a seasoned camp Dutch oven with a flat lid for briquettes or coals on the campfire.

Optional Dutch Oven liners or parchment paper – for faster clean-up.

Brownie Ingredients

For a rich and decadent base, pure organic butter and pure cacao powder that is made from cacao beans are my two must-have ingredients. (Not cocoa, everyday cocoa could be a mix of many different types of ingredients)

Oils

Of course, you can use vegetable oil, after you succeed with the basic recipe why not experiment and make olive oil brownies or coconut oil brownies?

Flavor

White and brown sugar, as well as a good shot of vanilla. (You could also experiment with coconut sugar or even monk fruit natural sweetener)

Eggs

For a better blend of all ingredients, make sure your eggs are at room temperature.

Dry Ingredients

Flour baking powder, and salt. (Once again after you see success with the basic brownie recipe why not experiment and change all-purpose flour for almond flour or coconut flour)

Choose a nut – chopped walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans, or almonds. TIP: always toast nuts before baking – the added flavors are delicious not to mention the crunchy texture they provide.

Chocolate or white chocolate chips.

Preparing Your Brownie Mixture

Grease and flour your Dutch oven. If you’re looking for a quicker cleanup option then use a Dutch oven liner or parchment paper along with the greasing and flouring of the inside of your pot.

In a stovetop cooking pot or another Dutch oven over low heat melt together butter, oil, and cacao powder.

Remove from heat and add sugar and vanilla while stirring continuously until blended. Add room-temperature eggs, one at a time.

Fold in flour, baking powder, and salt until just blended. Add the pre-roasted nuts and chocolate chips. Spread batter into a greased and floured 12″ Dutch oven or a lined Dutch oven.

Cooking Dutch Oven Brownies in the Oven

It is important to preheat your oven first before you get started so pre-heat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Place the Dutch oven in the middle of the oven “without” the Dutch oven lid.

USE YOUR OVEN MITTS – DUTCH OVEN IS HOT

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until a skewer, fork, or knife comes out clean after testing (around 30 minutes)

Let the Dutch oven cool a little before removing the brownie – this allows the brownie to firm up a little making it easier to cut and serve.

Cooking Dutch Oven Brownies on the Campfire

You will be baking at 350 degrees to achieve this your Dutch oven will require 17 coals on top and 8 on the bottom. Cook time 25-30 minutes. Test after 20 minutes your skewer, fork, or knife needs to come out clean.

Let the Dutch oven cool a little before removing the brownie – this allows the brownie to firm up a little making it easier to cut and serve.

TIP: Brownie prep for campfire brownies. Have all your ingredients pre-measured in zip-lock bags or storage containers before you leave home.

Serving Suggestions Dutch Oven Brownies

Served hot, these traditional Dutch oven chocolate treats are best accompanied by some fresh whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or custard and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar on top to make things even more decadent. May as well throw some extras on top to make the dessert extremely decadent.

  • Hot sauces poured over the top (caramel, chocolate, or salted caramel)
  • Melted spreads – peanut or hazelnut
  • Your choice of berries or mixed
  • Roasted crushed nuts
  • Shaved chocolate, chocolate chips
  • Sprinkles or marshmallows
