S’mores Cupcakes: Campfire-Inspired Treats Baked to Perfection

ByMichelle Updated onMay 29, 2025
Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

These S’mores Cupcakes bring all the gooey, chocolatey fun of campfire nights right into your kitchen. With a buttery graham cracker crust, moist chocolate cake, a surprise marshmallow fluff center, and that perfectly toasted meringue top, these cupcakes are a nostalgic dream come true.

Great when making them for a family gathering or a fun weekend project with the kids, they’re sure to light up faces just like a crackling fire. My own kids love helping with the graham cracker crust and seeing the frosting flame up with the kitchen torch (adult supervision required, of course!).

Why You’ll Love These Cakes

  • Brings the cozy magic of s’mores indoors
  • Perfect combo of textures: crunchy crust, fluffy cake, gooey filling
  • Kid-friendly and fun to make together
  • Impressive look, simple ingredients

Simple Ingredients

  • Graham cracker crumbs: The base layer adds a buttery crunch and nostalgic flavor.
  • Butter: Melted and mixed with the crumbs, it helps form a firm and tasty crust.
  • Chocolate cupcake mix: Speeds things up while still delivering that rich cocoa punch.
  • Marshmallow fluff: This gooey center mimics the melted marshmallows of classic s’mores.
  • Meringue frosting: Light, fluffy, and toasted to golden perfection for a fire-kissed finish.

Servings & Timing

  • Servings: 12 cupcakes
  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 box chocolate cupcake mix (plus ingredients needed on box)
  • 1 cup marshmallow fluff
  • 1 cup meringue frosting

Instructions

  1. Prepare Crust: Mix graham cracker crumbs and melted butter until combined. Press 1 tablespoon into the bottom of each cupcake liner.
  2. Add Chocolate Batter: Prepare the chocolate cupcake mix according to package instructions. Spoon batter over the graham crust in each liner until 2/3 full.
  3. Bake: Bake according to the cupcake mix instructions (usually about 18–22 minutes). Let them cool completely.
  4. Fill with Fluff: Using a piping bag or spoon, fill the center of each cooled cupcake with marshmallow fluff.
  5. Frost and Toast: Pipe meringue frosting on top. Carefully toast the frosting using a kitchen torch until golden brown.

Top Tips

  • Let cupcakes cool fully before adding marshmallow fluff to avoid melting.
  • A small apple corer works great to remove the center for the filling.
  • Supervise kids if using a kitchen torch or let them watch while you do the fun part!
  • Toast frosting in sections to avoid burning.
  • For extra crunch, sprinkle a little graham dust on top.

Recipe Variations

  • Swap the meringue for marshmallow fluff frosting
  • Add mini chocolate chips into the batter for extra gooeyness
  • Use a brownie mix instead of chocolate cake for richer flavor

Recommended Equipment

  • Muffin tin
  • Cupcake liners
  • Mixing bowls
  • Piping bags
  • Spatula
  • Kitchen torch

Make Ahead Tips

Cupcakes can be baked and filled a day in advance. Store unfrosted and frost just before serving.

How to Store and Reheat

Store cupcakes in an airtight container at room temp for 2 days. For longer storage, refrigerate up to 4 days. Bring to room temp before serving. Toast frosting fresh if possible.

What to Serve With This Recipe

  • Cold milk or hot cocoa
  • Fresh berries
  • Mini campfire-themed snacks like pretzel sticks and chocolate bark

What You Need to Know About This Recipe

This is a great beginner-friendly bake that looks super impressive but is easy enough for a weekend treat. Using boxed mix and marshmallow fluff keeps it simple without sacrificing taste. It’s a sweet way to bring s’mores to the table without needing a fire pit.

History of S’mores

The first published recipe for s’mores appeared in a 1927 Girl Scouts guidebook titled Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. The treat originally called “Some More” was a beloved fireside snack made from graham crackers, toasted marshmallows, and chocolate. Its popularity soared as families embraced camping and cookouts in the 20th century. Today, s’mores remain a nostalgic favorite, symbolizing summer, togetherness, and that irresistible mix of gooey, crunchy, and sweet.
