Easy Homemade Dipping Sauces for Chicken Wings

ByMichelle Updated onMay 28, 2026

The kind of sauces that make people ask for the recipe before they’ve even finished their plate.

There’s a moment at every good gathering someone reaches for another wing, drags it slowly through a little bowl of sauce, and goes very quiet for a second. That quiet is the goal. That quiet is what a really good homemade dipping sauce does.

If you’ve already made a batch of crispy baked chicken wings, you know the wings themselves don’t need much help. But the right dipping sauce turns a plate of wings into something people genuinely talk about. It adds a contrast of flavour and texture cool against hot, creamy against crisp, tangy against savoury and it gives your table that small extra touch that feels thoughtful without being complicated.

Golden crispy chicken wings served on a rustic wooden board with a variety of homemade dipping sauces including ranch, buffalo, spicy mayo, and barbecue sauce

Easy Dipping Sauces for Chicken Wings

All six of the sauces below can be made in under ten minutes, with ingredients you likely already have. No special equipment, no fuss. Just good flavour.

1. Classic Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce

honey mustard dipping sauce, celery, carrots, chicken wings

There’s a reason honey mustard has never gone out of style. It’s that perfect balance of sweet and sharp mellow enough for kids, interesting enough for adults, and generous enough to go with just about everything. This homemade version is so much better than anything from a bottle that you’ll struggle to go back.

Best with: Classic baked wings, lemon pepper wings, plain crispy wings, and garlic butter wings. It’s also wonderful alongside a platter of veggie sticks if you’re serving a crowd.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a small bowl.
  2. Whisk together until smooth and creamy.
  3. Taste and adjust more honey for sweetness, more mustard for sharpness.
  4. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes before serving so the flavours can settle.

Storage: Keeps beautifully in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 7 days. Stir before serving.

2. Garlic Parmesan Dipping Sauce

garlic parmesan dipping sauce chicken wings, carrots, celery

Rich, savoury, and quietly indulgent this is the sauce that disappears fastest. The combination of real garlic and parmesan gives it a depth that feels almost restaurant-quality, but it comes together in minutes on your kitchen bench. It’s creamy without being heavy, and the parmesan adds just enough salt that you barely need to season it further.

Best with: Garlic parmesan wings, plain crispy baked wings, or any wing with a simple dry rub. It also pairs beautifully with celery sticks on the side.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced or pressed
  • ¼ cup finely grated parmesan cheese (Affiliate)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine mayonnaise and sour cream in a bowl and stir until smooth.
  2. Add the minced garlic, parmesan, lemon juice, and Italian seasoning.
  3. Mix well until everything is evenly combined.
  4. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.
  5. For the best flavour, refrigerate for 20–30 minutes before serving to let the garlic mellow slightly.

Storage: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. The garlic flavour deepens over time in the best possible way.

3. Creamy Asian-Inspired Dipping Sauce

creamy asian dipping sauce, various chicken wings

This one has a little mystery to it. It’s creamy and slightly sweet, with a background warmth from ginger and a hint of sesame that lingers. It tastes complex but comes together in one bowl with no cooking at all. If you’ve ever wondered what makes a dipping sauce feel different more interesting, more layered this is it.

Best with: Asian-style wings, teriyaki wings, sticky soy-glazed wings, or any wing with a sweeter or umami-forward marinade. It also works beautifully as a drizzle over wings before serving.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients except sesame seeds in a small bowl.
  2. Whisk until smooth and well combined.
  3. Taste and adjust a little more sweet chilli for sweetness, a little more soy for depth.
  4. Sprinkle sesame seeds over the top before serving if using.

Storage: Keeps in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 5 days. The flavour improves after a few hours of resting.

4. Smoky BBQ Ranch Dipping Sauce

smoky bbq ran dipping sauce carrots, chicken wings

This is the crowd-pleaser of the group the one that suits everyone from the fussiest child to the most enthusiastic wing fan at the table. It takes the familiar comfort of ranch and gives it a smoky, barbecue-kissed warmth that makes it feel elevated without losing any of its approachability. Two sauces, one bowl, and the result is better than either one alone.

Best with: BBQ wings, smoky dry-rub wings, buffalo wings, and any wing with bold seasoning. It also doubles beautifully as a salad dressing or a dip for potato wedges.

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons good-quality BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives or dried dill
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine the sour cream, BBQ sauce, and mayonnaise in a bowl.
  2. Add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  3. Stir until smooth and creamy.
  4. Fold in the chives or dill.
  5. Season with salt to taste and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Storage: Store covered in the fridge for up to 5 days. Stir well before serving as it may thicken slightly when cold.

5. Honey Garlic Dipping Sauce

honey garlic dipping sauce in a rustic ceramic bowl with a honey dipper

Sticky, glossy, and just a little bit addictive this one gets scraped from the bowl. It’s warm and sweet with real garlic depth, and unlike most dipping sauces this one is cooked, which gives it that beautiful concentrated flavour. It takes about five minutes on the stove and fills the kitchen with the kind of smell that brings people wandering in from other rooms.

Best with: Honey garlic wings, plain crispy baked wings, lemon pepper wings, and any simply seasoned wing where you want the sauce to do the flavour work. Also wonderful drizzled warm over a whole platter of wings.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon chilli flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon cold water (optional, for thickness)

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook gently for 1–2 minutes until fragrant but not browned.
  3. Add the honey, soy sauce, and apple cider vinegar. Stir to combine.
  4. Let the sauce simmer for 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. If you prefer a thicker sauce, stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook for another minute until glossy and slightly thickened.
  6. Add chilli flakes if using, then remove from heat.
  7. Serve warm, or allow to cool to room temperature.

Storage: This sauce can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 7 days. Reheat gently in a small saucepan or microwave before serving it thickens considerably when cold.

6. Lemon Pepper Yogurt Dip

lemon pepper yogurt dip, lemon quarters, chicken wings

Light, fresh, and a little tangy this one feels like a breath of air among the richer sauces. It’s made with Greek yogurt as the base, which gives it a lovely creaminess without being heavy, and the bright hit of lemon zest with cracked black pepper makes it feel clean and vibrant. It’s the sauce you reach for when you want something that cuts through rather than adds to.

Best with: Lemon pepper wings, herb-seasoned wings, plain crispy wings, and lighter baked wings without heavy glazes. It also works wonderfully as a cooling contrast alongside a spicier wing variety on the same platter.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt (full fat for best texture)
  • Zest of 1 large lemon
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, grated or pressed
  • 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper (more to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill or parsley, finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon honey
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Spoon the Greek yogurt into a bowl.
  2. Add the lemon zest, lemon juice, and grated garlic. Stir to combine.
  3. Add the cracked black pepper, fresh herbs, and honey.
  4. Stir everything together until smooth and well seasoned.
  5. Taste and adjust more lemon for brightness, more pepper for warmth.
  6. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes before serving to let the flavours come together.

Storage: Keeps in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 4 days. Best consumed within the first two days when the lemon is at its brightest.

7. Spicy Buffalo Ranch Dipping Sauce

spicy buffalo dipping sauce

This is what happens when two classic sauces stop competing and start cooperating. Buffalo sauce brings the heat and tang, ranch brings the cool creaminess, and together they land somewhere genuinely satisfying bold enough to feel exciting, smooth enough to keep you coming back. It’s the kind of dip that disappears quickly and always prompts someone to ask what’s in it.

Best with: Your crispy baked buffalo wings this is the natural companion for that post and the pairing feels complete. It also works beautifully alongside plain crispy baked wings when you want to bring the heat through the sauce rather than the wing itself.

    Ingredients

    • ⅓ cup mayonnaise
    • 3 tablespoons sour cream
    • 3 tablespoons buffalo hot sauce (Frank’s RedHot works perfectly)
    • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon onion powder
    • ½ teaspoon dried dill
    • ½ teaspoon dried chives
    • Salt and black pepper to taste

    Instructions

    1. Combine the mayonnaise and sour cream in a bowl and stir until smooth.
    2. Add the buffalo sauce, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, and onion powder.
    3. Stir until well combined and evenly pink-orange throughout.
    4. Add the dried dill and chives, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
    5. Taste and adjust more buffalo sauce for heat, more sour cream to mellow it.
    6. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Storage: Keeps in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. The heat mellows very slightly over time, so if you like it fiery, add an extra splash of buffalo sauce before serving.

      8. Creamy BBQ Dipping Sauce

creamy bbq dipping sauce potato wedges, chicken wings

This is the richer, deeper cousin of the Smoky BBQ Ranch where that sauce is light and herby, this one is full-bodied and concentrated. It’s built around a proper BBQ base with just enough creaminess to round off the edges, and it has that slow, smoky sweetness that makes you want to linger at the table a little longer. Simple to make, and genuinely impressive.

Best with: Your extra crunchy crispy oven baked BBQ wings the two were made for each other. The sauce deepens the BBQ flavour already in the wings rather than competing with it. Also wonderful as a dipping sauce for potato wedges or corn on the cob alongside a wing platter.

      Ingredients

      • ½ cup good-quality BBQ sauce
      • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
      • 2 tablespoons sour cream
      • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
      • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
      • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
      • 1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional, depending on your BBQ sauce)
      • Salt to taste

      Instructions

      1. Combine the BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, and sour cream in a bowl.
      2. Add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
      3. Stir until completely smooth and evenly combined.
      4. Taste if your BBQ sauce is on the tangier side, add the brown sugar to balance it.
      5. Season with salt to taste, then cover and refrigerate until needed.

Storage: Stores well in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 6 days. The flavour deepens after the first 24 hours, making this one of the best make-ahead sauces on this list.

A Few Tips for Serving Sauces Alongside Wings

A small bowl for each sauce feels more intentional than one large communal dip, and it gives people the freedom to mix and match without hesitation. If you’re serving a crowd, label each sauce with a little handwritten card it sparks conversation and helps guests find their favourites quickly.

For gatherings, consider setting out two or three contrasting sauces rather than all six at once: one creamy, one tangy, one sweet. That balance gives people options without overwhelming the table.

And if you have time, make the sauces the day before. Almost every sauce on this list is better the next day, once the garlic has mellowed, the lemon has settled, and all the flavours have had a chance to become friends.
