Short Review

These three cast-iron Dutch ovens the 2-quart, 5-quart, and 7-quart  will feed between one to ten people depending upon your portion sizes. For optimum use, I would re-season the cast iron before first use to ensure maximum nonstick potential. Cleaning is kept to a minimum if the seasoning is maintained as the food will not adhere to the cast iron.

I believe for the novice to cast iron cooking or anyone wanting to add extra pieces or sizes to their cast iron collection would greatly benefit from the entry-level price that this AmazonBasics range sells for.

The Review

You will be pleased to note the double packaging that your new oven arrives in to help prevent any damage during transit to you.

This cast-iron Dutch oven arrives pre-seasoned with penetrating vegetable oil which was then thoroughly baked. The oil leaves a black patina which means the food will not adhere and release from the cast iron.

This is great as you can begin preparing your favorite dishes as soon as you wish.

As with other cast iron ovens it is constructed with heavy-duty cast iron. The thick bottom and walls of the oven allow for even heating and heat retention.

The Dutch oven combined with its heavy lid which seals in the goodness and moisture will have you preparing nutritious meals in no time.

In these three different size Dutch ovens you can boil, bake, braise and roast all you need to do is adjust the ingredients of your recipe to suit the size of Dutch oven you choose.

This Dutch oven can withstand temperatures of up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. So there should not be very many dishes you cannot prepare in this cast iron oven.

The handles on either side of the Dutch oven are a generous loop style. So your oven mitts will fit snugly allowing a secure, steady hold when carrying or lifting the oven.

What Cooking Surfaces Can I Use This Dutch Oven On? – All Cooking Surfaces

This pre-seasoned Dutch oven can, of course, be used in the traditional manner. On an open fire, over hot coals, under a broiler as well as on a grill or barbecue.

It can also be used on gas, electric, ceramic, and induction cooktops as well as in your traditional conventional oven.

You will be able to use these Dutch ovens as a one-pot option. Sauteing or browning on the cooktop, add your other ingredients finish on the cooktop, or transfer to the conventional oven.

You can then transfer it to the table and serve the dish steaming hot straight from the cast-iron Dutch oven. Return the lid and it will keep your dish lovely and warm for leftovers or when the pot has cooled into the refrigerator for later.

You can also reverse engineer and have your ingredients ready in the Dutch oven in the refrigerator. Just take it out and let it return to room temperature. Then proceed to warm the Dutch oven up slowly. Cook your dish then serve directly from the pot at the table.

Extreme care must be taken when using this cast iron on any delicate cooking surfaces such as glass or ceramic. No dragging, scraping or dropping the Dutch oven on these surfaces or you will damage them.

Cooking with Your New Dutch oven

As with all cast iron cooking, you should always apply some oil then heat the oven up slowly using medium heat. You can then start your cooking process.

The best utensils suitable for cast iron cooking are wooden, plastic, or silicone. Metal or sharp utensils will scratch the surface and compromise the seasoning, you could then have rust issues.

This is not the end of the world but you will have a big clean-up to undergo before you can reseason.

Safety first as always the handles and lid handle will be extremely hot so use potholders.

Care and Maintenance

It is recommended with all cast iron cooking appliances to clean before your first use.

Do this by rinsing the cast iron with hot water and drying thoroughly.

I would recommend that before your first use you season the cast iron with your oil of choice.

Do not use any soap as it breaks down the seasoning leaving the cast iron exposed. Rust could ensue. Also, do not put hot cast iron into cold water you will damage it.

After you have used your cast iron let it cool before cleaning.

Clean the cookware in hot water. If required, for stubborn food particles, you can use a nylon scrubbing brush. Rinse and towel dry immediately to avoid rusting.

Then apply a light coat of your oil of choice to the cooking surface while the oven is still warm from the cleaning process. This process will prevent rusting.

Store in a dry place and do not stack other cookware on top of the oven.

The Pros and Cons

Pros

  • 2 -quart size oven is not too heavy perfect for the single person
  • 3 sizes available to suit any requirement
  • When seasoned correctly there is no sticking at all when beans and rice are prepared in the oven

Cons

  • The cast iron is rough
  • If you want to use this Dutch oven for camping you cannot pile coals on the lid as it if domed and the coals will not stay on top
  • 7-quart size – heavy
  • Unfortunately, it is “NOT” dishwasher-safe

Uses for this Dutch oven

The Verdict – AmazonBasics Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Dutch Oven Range

For cast-iron Dutch ovens that are priced between $20 and $40, I believe you really can’t go wrong. Yes, it appears that pre-seasoning should take place before use.

But I myself carry out that task whether the cast iron is priced at $20 or $200.

I want my iron to be fully nonstick as well as protected from whatever I throw at it. To ensure the non-stick outcome I reseason regularly.

The AmazonBasics range is backed by a limited one-year warranty. As it is Amazon’s own range one would assume that they would want quality products attached to their name.

An interesting fact is that as the range is new to the market the feedback from purchasers is amazing. You can click here to have a good look at these reviews yourself.
