Substitutions
While this recipe is simple and flavorful as is, there are a few substitutions you can make if you’re looking for a different variation.
You can substitute the chicken breasts with juicy chicken thighs – just make sure the whole family will eat this part of the chicken.
If you don’t have an onion soup mix on hand, you can use garlic powder, dried minced onions, and poultry seasoning in their place. You could also use a different type of mushroom soup, such as cream of celery or cream of chicken.
Paprika can be substituted with cayenne pepper or smoked paprika for a slightly different flavor. And if you don’t have chicken broth, you could use beef broth or vegetable broth instead.
If you want to change the rice, you could also use brown rice or wild rice. You could also add some vegetables to the dish, such as peas, carrots, or corn.
If you don’t have a Dutch oven, a large baking dish will work just as well. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for an extra half hour. The need to bake for longer is because the foil does not have the same tight seal as a Dutch oven lid to keep the steam in.
