Review

When You Unpack Your New Dutch Oven

The 5.5-quart enameled cast-iron Dutch is made from sturdy cast iron construction and is covered with PFOA- and PTFE-free porcelain enamel. Great even heat distribution and the heavy lid keep the moisture and goodness in while cooking.

The Dutch oven is very modern looking and would look great in any kitchen or dinner table.

The enamel color on both the blue and the red is deeper at the bottom of the oven and around the outside of the lid. Then changes color towards the top of the oven and the center of the lid.

The dimensions of the oven are 12 inches x 11.6 inches x 5.5 inches and it weighs 13.1 pounds.

Dutch Oven Uses

Use this oven for baking, braising, sauteing, roasting, just about anything you can think of.

Stews, casseroles, oats, roasts, chili, beans, soups, potatoes, bread, cakes, desserts plus all your favorites.

Why not utilize the beauty of your Dutch oven. You most certainly can serve your prepared meals straight from the cooktop/oven to the table.

But what about utilizing the fact that cast iron has insulation properties so the Dutch oven can keep in the cold. With the ability to keep food cold the possible uses as a serving piece are endless.

Keep and serve salads, desserts, punch cold I’m sure you can think of many ways to use the oven for serving.

Cooking With This Dutch Oven

You can cook with this Dutch oven on gas, electric, glass, ceramic, induction, and halogen cooktops. As well as in your conventional oven up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

The oven features a stainless steel knob as well as self-basting condensation bumps on the lid. You will need to remember that the steel knob and the handles will get hot especially in the oven, so use oven mitts.

A bonus with the lid for this Dutch oven is that it can be used with Hamilton Beach’s 10-inch cast-iron skillet if you have one.

The PFOA- and PTFE-free porcelain enamel cooking surface will not react with food. Providing food doesn’t stick or get burnt onto the surface it will be easy to clean.

Care and Maintenance

When cooking with enamel you should never use metal utensils. Use instead of silicon, plastic, or wood. They will not scratch your enamel surface and protect your Dutch oven.

Dishwasher safe the manufacturer advises, but I always wash my enamel by hand.

Any burnt food particles or sticking boil water in the oven for a couple of minutes. Then use silicone, plastic, or wooden scraper to lift the particles off.

Warm hand wash is required in soapy water. Dry thoroughly so the cast iron will not rust when stored.

Do not stack any other cookware on you enamel Dutch oven this helps prevent chipping while in storage.

Hamilton Beach 5.5 Quart Cast Iron Dutch Oven Pot + 10-inch Cast Iron Skillet

This package includes the 5.5 Quart Cast Iron Dutch Oven as well as the 10-inch cast-iron skillet which utilizes the lid from the Dutch oven.

Read the review above for all you need to know about the Dutch oven

The skillet will come in handy as you can utilize the lid from the Dutch oven to cook with on the skillet or to just keep food warm. Remember that the skillet is enameled cast iron so it has all the same great benefits of the Dutch oven.

Breakfast – you can use the skillet to prepare fried eggs, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, or pancakes while your oats are cooking in the Dutch oven.

Lunch or dinner – cook your chicken, seafood, or any other meat while your vegetable dish cooks in the Dutch oven. Alternatively, a salad could be keeping cold in the Dutch oven in the refrigerator while you prepare your meat in the skillet.

There are a lot of benefits to having both the skillet and Dutch oven. The one that stands out for me is that you will be able to prepare larger meals due to the surface room.

Another benefit of buying this package is that for a lot less than purchasing both items separately you can get all three together for a great price.

Which Is Better Cast Iron or Enameled Cast Iron?

To define which is better for you, you need to know where you want to cook with the piece.

Inside only – an enamel cast iron piece would suit.

Outside only – you cannot use enamel cast iron on open fires you will ruin the piece. So it is seasoned cast iron in this case.

Inside and outside – a flat bottomed seasoned cast iron piece will do the job inside and out.

An in-depth article here will provide a better overview of both types of cookware.
