Le Creuset Replacement Knob Guide
Did you know that with just a few quick steps, you can change the knobs on your Le Creuset cast iron lids!
Le Creuset knobs are not just mere decoration they are interchangeable. These knobs can be used in three different ways: as a replacement for damaged knobs, as a knob with more heat resistance, and as a decorative accessory for Le Creuset cookware.
Replacement knobs are available in black, gold, stainless steel, and copper as well as other shapes such as the stainless steel floral knob.
Do you want to replace your Le Creuset’s black knob but you are unsure of which knob you need or even the differences between the black knob and the silver knob?
Understanding the differences between a Le Creuset black phenolic knob and a Le Creuset stainless steel knob will help you decide on an alternative Le Creuset knob.
Are Le Creuset Knobs Oven Safe?
Yes, Le Creuset knobs are oven-safe. Although the knobs are different colors the metal knobs have the same heat resistance, and the black Phenolic knobs can withstand less heat. Here is the breakdown;
- Le Creuset Classic Black Phenolic Knobs are safe in the oven up to a temperature of 390°F or 195 degrees C. (Logo & name stamped on the knob)
- Le Creuset Signature Black Phenolic Knobs are safe in the oven up to a temperature of 480°F or 245 degrees C.
- Le Creuset Stainless Steel Knobs are oven safe up to 500 degrees F or 260 degrees C.
- Le Creuset Gold Knobs are oven safe up to 500 degrees F or 260 degrees C.
- Le Creuset Light Gold Knobs are oven safe up to 500 degrees F or 260 degrees C.
- Le Creuset Copper Knobs are oven safe up to 500 degrees F or 260 degrees C.
- Le Creuset Iridescent Knobs are oven safe up to 500 degrees F or 260 degrees C.
When to Replace Le Creuset Knobs
Le Creuset knobs may become damaged due to various reasons, including but not limited to impact from dropping or scraping against other hard surfaces, corrosion from water damage due to leakage, or general wear-and-tear associated with normal usage over an extended amount of time.
If any Le Creuset knob has become damaged, Le Creuset recommends replacing it. Le Creuset knobs are sold as individual pieces, and replacement Le Creuset knobs can be purchased from a Le Creuset retailer or directly from Le Creuset.
It is important to note that Le Creuset does have a limited lifetime warranty on their products, so if there is something wrong with the knob beyond normal wear and tear, please contact the company to discuss your options.
Interchangeable Le Creuset Knobs
There are two types of Le Creuset knobs the classic black knobs and the metal knobs. There was a time when most Le Creuset cookware arrived with the black knob only. No longer! You actually have the choice upon purchase of which type of knob you would like.
What are Le Creuset knobs made of?
Le Creuset Classic Black Phenolic Knobs
Le Creuset Classic black phenolic knobs are made from black polymer, a strong and durable plastic-type material, making these knobs long-lasting, reliable, and dishwasher safe. They are heat resistant up to 390°F or 195 ̊C and can be used on electric, gas, induction, ceramic, halogen, and in the oven. Black Le Creuset knob sizes are small (1 3/4 inches) and large (2 1/4 inches).
Herein lies the restriction with the black knobs. Their heat resistance is good on a stovetop but when you want to use your Le Creuset cookware in a conventional oven to bake bread keeping the oven temperature below 390°F is difficult. So the chances of the phenolic knobs warping and melting are quite high.
Never fear you can replace your black knob with a black replacement, but for not much more expense you can have a metal knob that will keep you covered when using your cookware in the oven.

Le Creuset Black Knob vs Le Creuset Silver Knob
The only real difference between the Classic black knob and the Signature stainless steel knobs is the temperature each can withstand. The heat limit of the black knob is up to 390°F oven safe, and the stainless steel, gold, and copper up to (any) or 500°F oven safe.
Whether it’s because of your own personal aesthetic preference or if your lid is required to go into the oven to prepare your favorite dishes.
Changing out those old knobs will have a big impact on your cookware’s design and can make all the difference in protecting the existing knob. It’s also a quick, easy, and affordable fix.
