Lodge Manufacturing’s History
The Lodge Manufacturing Company is an American family-owned business with a cast iron foundry in Tennessee. The family has been casting iron since 1896. Since that time, they have been perfecting their processes so every piece of cookware is the very best it can be.
Joseph Lodge, the founder of the business, would be so proud that today, Lodge is still manufacturing cast iron products on home soil in the States. They could send manufacturing offshore as many other manufacturers have over the years.
Today, the Lodge foundry is a green foundry. Since 2018, they have recycled unstable oils and foundry sand. They also use recycled/biodegradable packaging. Combine all that with the fact that they are a zero hazardous waste stream foundry. This company is going from strength to strength.
Lodge Cast Iron received the Tennessee Governor’s Award for Excellence in Hazardous Waste Reduction in 1994. 2013 Lodge received an award from the Tennessee Governor, Award for Trade Excellence. Read more about Lodge Manufacturing.

Lodge Cast Iron Products
Lodge has two types of cast iron Dutch ovens and other cookware pieces, seasoned (bare) cast iron and enameled cast iron.
Both types are made by pouring Lodge’s formula of pig iron and other high-quality metals into sand molds – known as castings. Amazingly sand has a higher melting point than molten iron so the molds hold their shape until it is ready to be broken to reveal the iron cookware.
This process has been carried out since the 9th century, and luxury cast iron cookware manufacturers Le Creuset and Staub in France still use the same process to this day.
Lodge, in 2002, was the first to introduce seasoning cast iron before it leaves the factory. It is now an industry standard. Lodge continues to season the bare cast iron with their own tried, tested, and proven seasoning formula before it leaves the factory.
These ovens are then ready for use on a campfire or any kitchen heat source. Lodge cast iron is oven safe, 500 °F, including the knob on the lid, and because they are made from metal and are magnetic they are naturally induction compatible.
Enameled cast iron cookware has the same sand-cast core then it is covered with layers of enamel that are baked onto the core at extremely high temperatures. Left is a cast iron pot complete with a lid that has a bright shiny exterior that protects the iron from rust and does not need to be seasoned.

Where is Lodge Cast Iron Made?
Seasoned Cast Iron and Seasoned Carbon Steel products are manufactured at the Lodge foundry in South Pittsburg, Tennessee.
Lodges enameled cast iron products are made in China. Lodge uses a third-party inspection company to ensure its strict quality standards are followed.

Lodge Dutch Oven Designs
Lodge seasoned and enameled cast-iron Dutch oven designs are sturdy with thick bases, some with legs and some without. Rounding up from the base the oven walls, at 3.18 mm thick, are only marginally thinner than the base, integrated handles, meaning they are built into the design and cast all in one piece. Fitted heavy lid that keeps the moisture inside the oven for its self-basting feature.
Lodge seasoned cast iron lid loops and lifting bail handles are generous and reach the same temperatures as the cookware itself. Dutch oven accessories such as lid lifters, tripods, fire retardant oven mitts, and trivets make using the ovens safely.
Lodge enamel cast iron have metal knobs and is oven safe.
Performance
- The best practice with cast iron is always heating up a Dutch oven on low to medium heat while searing and browning the first ingredients. After adding all ingredients and liquid, you can then increase the heat as required
- It is easy with the shape of the round Lodge oven as the base fits over the hob to absorb high heat, and the round sides make it easy to move the ingredients around without sticking to corners
- The lodge doesn’t disappoint with even heating and moisture retention
- I have proven time and again when preparing dishes in my Le Creuset, Staub, and Lodge Dutch oven that the result is always the same – DELICIOUS
Shapes and Sizes
Lodge seasoned cast iron comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Camp ovens with flat bottoms, some with legs, domed lids, flat lids, lid loops, lid handles, or wire bails. All shapes can be used in the kitchen and adapted to campfires, briquettes, tripods, or gas grill cooking. 7 sizes, including shallow and deep ovens.
Lodge enameled cast-iron Dutch ovens are available in 6 sizes 5 round ovens, this includes 1 shallow casserole and 1 large oval shape Dutch oven.

Cleaning and Maintenance
For best results over a longer period of time, although seasoned cast iron is pre-seasoned it should be seasoned prior to its first. See how to achieve that in my article that dives into why and how you should season your cast iron cookware before its first use.
Continued cleaning and maintenance involve hot water and a scrubbing brush, drying, and store away from humidity. Re-season when the natural non-stick surface breaks down (food starts sticking)
Enameled cast iron does not need seasoning, but plenty of oil should be used during cooking to avoid sticking. The best practice is to wash with warm soapy water as soon as possible after each use, avoiding the dishwasher for all cast iron cookware!
Cleaning enamel cast iron can be a chore check out my instructions for cleaning enamel cast iron cookware.
Make sure you store your cast iron cookware safely.

Lodge vs Le Creuset
Comparing Lodge and Le Creuset Dutch round ovens of the same size reveal that the Lodge handles are longer but thinner in-depth than the Signature Le Creuset. So Le Creuset gets a tick as safety is paramount with cast iron cooking.
The metal knobs on both models are oven safe to 500°F.
The Le Creuset walls are thinner, making the Dutch oven a little quicker to heat up. As you will see, this does not affect the heat and moisture retention of the Lodge oven
Putting both brands of Dutch ovens through their paces revealed that Lodge and Le Creuset enamel ovens’ heat and moisture retention properties were so close it was hardly worth a mention. The real difference between the two is in the design, weight, and price of equivalent-sized ovens.
What Lodge produces is comparable to the Le Creuset range! Unfortunately, not all of us can afford Le Creuset, and if this answer does come down to money. Those cooks who purchase Lodge and never own a Le Creuset are more than happy with their purchased product.
Is Le Creuset Dutch Oven Worth the Money?
If you use a piece of cookware such as Le Creuset as much as possible, yes, it is worth the money.
Remember, there are many ways to use a Dutch oven; an oven like this will replace many pieces of cookware or appliances that you may not be using in your kitchen.
Cooking is not the only way to use a gorgeous decor piece. Use your imagination. If you are paying for it, you should be looking at it every day.
